ABC privatization was a key component of the Governor’s campaign in 2009. He claimed that privatization would generate hundreds of millions of dollars in a one-time windfall which he would use for badly needed transportation funding. He also promised that the sell-off could be accomplished without losing the tens of millions of dollars in profits that flow into the state treasury every year.

As the deadline approached for introducing legislation this session, the Governor lined up a sponsor (or “patron,” as it’s called down here) for his plan in the Senate. However, he was unable to find any member in the House of Delegates (where his party dominates 61-39) to put the bill in. In order to ensure that the plan would have a chance of being heard in both houses of the General Assembly, I introduced the bill embodying the Governor’s plan on Thursday.

It all comes down to the numbers, and I have major concerns about whether the numbers work in this version of the plan. The only way we’ll be able to ascertain that is if the plan is discussed and aired in public. We’ll see . . .

Priorities in education, transportation, the environment, health care and our community values are being questioned.  It is time for us as a community to talk about what is important to us and what we must work to preserve.
